Welcome to The Kava Society

What is kava?
Kava is both a plant (Piper methysticum) and the traditional Pacific drink of peace made from its roots. For over 3,000 years, Pacific Island cultures have gathered around kava bowls for ceremony, reflection, and conversation. Kava has long been enjoyed for its calming, grounding qualities, a relaxed clarity that lets you slow down and be present without diminishing mental awareness. Today people across the world drink kava for unwinding, connecting, and quiet contemplation.

Our Kava
Our kava is trusted globally for exceptional quality. Hand-selected, organically grown noble cultivars go from harvest to sealed package within days, often hours. They’re processed in HACCP-certified facilities using bespoke methods developed over years of research and refinement, to preserve maximum freshness and purity. Every batch is laboratory-tested for quality, potency and food safety. The result is the closest thing to drinking freshly harvested kava in Vanuatu, without going there yourself. By every measure.

Our Story
Our story began in 2011 when doctoral students and lecturers at the University of Auckland created an informal Kava Appreciation Society. Unhappy with the kava quality available in New Zealand, we embarked on a research collaboration with Vanuatu partners to develop products that preserve the quality and essence of freshly harvested, top-grade kava plants. What started for university gatherings quickly gained a following. Today, we run a globally renowned online shop and have co-created Auckland’s Four Shells Kava Lounge.
